According to a 2006 UN FAO Report titled Livestock's Long Shadow - Environmental Issues and Options, the livestock industry is responsible for emitting more greenhouse gases than, let's say your car. And no, I am not comparing the whole industry to a single car, it's emissions by one car v/s per capita meat consumption. The report calculates the lead to be 18% which Cattlemen's Beef Board and National Cattlemen's Beef Association reject. But the scope of the latter's calculation is limited to US while that of FAO's report is global.
You might be wondering, why the gyaan? Well, "Global Warming and Meat Eating" happens to be the topic for my major project. I was unaware of the severity of impacts the industry has on our environment until recently when I attended a two-hour lecture on this topic at a workshop on Disaster Management. Though, our project work will be restricted to meat industry in Bhopal but I plan to work beyond the project, meaning, I will be posting frequently about this now.
I should better get back to studying for my exam tomorrow now.
